Weekly Service Update

Announcement Number: CN2014-42

To Our Customers,

Over the past week, many areas of our network experienced record cold temperatures for this time of year. Records were broken in places such as Colorado, Wyoming, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas. The rapid change in temperature caused rail breaks in numerous locations. Through successful implementation of our winter weather plan, our engineering team was able to repair broken rails and restore service safely and quickly. While we were quick to respond to weather issues, the snow and cold weather combined with continued congestion in the Pacific Northwest impacted velocity. We expect continued velocity challenges through this week as we recover from the winter storm.

Below are some network statistics from last week:

  • Carloadings for the week ending Nov. 15, 2014, were 184,700, down slightly from the previous week as weather impacted our network. Fourth quarter carloadings to date are 7% percent higher than 2013.
  • AAR system velocity was 23.2 mph, up 0.1 mph from the previous week.
  • System terminal dwell was 30.7 hours, up 0.6 hours from the previous week.
  • In total, we had 296,700 cars online, which is flat with the previous week.
