Weekly Service Update

Announcement Number: CN2015-18
Categories: Weekly Service Updates
Posted Date: February 25, 2015

To Our Customers,

Network velocity improved by a tenth of a mile per hour last week. The network was impacted by a variety of winter weather conditions, ranging from ice in our Southern region, to extreme cold in our Northern region and snowfall in the Rockies. We continue to rely on our winter weather preparedness plan to mitigate the effects of weather events. With an agreement between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) pending approval, West Coast ports are expected to return to normal operations over the next several weeks. Union Pacific has plans in place and resources staged to handle increasing traffic.

Union Pacific continues to invest capital in maintenance projects across our network. One highlight is our Giddings subdivision, located between the Texas cities of Hearne and West Point (just east of Smithville), which will be undergoing a maintenance blitz March 1-6. During the blitz, we will be completing a variety of maintenance work and plans are in place to minimize customer impact. Additional information on the Giddings blitz and other maintenance projects can be found at MyUPRR (user ID and password required).

Below are some network statistics from last week:

  • Carloadings for the week ending Feb. 21, 2015, were 156,800. This is down 13 percent to the same week last year.
  • AAR system velocity was 24.5 mph, up 0.1 mph compared to the previous week.
  • System terminal dwell was 29.9 hours, up slightly compared to the previous week.
  • In total, we had 291,189 cars online, which is about 2,000 lower than the previous week.
Thank you for your business. Please contact the National Customer Service Center or your Union Pacific representative with any questions.
