Union Pacific has a proven commitment to enhance our rail network and support growth in our business, investing $15 billion in the last 5 years and an anticipated record $3.6 billion by the end of 2012. Customers across the network - in all lines of business - benefit from these investments in safety, service, growth and productivity.

Approximately half of the investment in 2012 is being spent to harden our rail infrastructure, making the network safe and resilient.  These investments include major projects like double track on the Sunset Corridor, the Blair Project to improve transit across our Central Corridor, numerous new sidings throughout the Pacific Northwest, and various expansions in the South to improve capacity and velocity. This year, we're also planning to acquire 200 new road locomotives, and close to 1,600 freight cars across our entire system. These equipment acquisitions not only serve as replacements for older, less efficient assets but prepare our system to meet expected business growth.

In order to generate an acceptable level of return on our investments for maintenance and expansion, we review and adjust our transportation rates accordingly. These rates will be published at market levels, with all rates subject to Union Pacific's carload mileage fuel surcharge provision. We are providing our customers with advance notice so you can plan ahead for these adjustments.

Effective January 1, 2013, Union Pacific will be making adjustments to the following metals rate documents reflective of current market conditions.

  • UPRR 3312 - Mini-Mill and Structural Steel
  • UPRR 33123 - Steel Plate and Coil
  • UPRR 33126 - Steel Pipe and Railway Track Material
  • UPRR 3338 - Non-Ferrous Metals
  • UPRR 3339 - Non-Ferrous Ores
  • UPRR 4021- Scrap Steel and Pig Iron
