Earth Day Is For the Birds and More at Union Pacific

Students made paper birds as part of their Earth Day lesson on protecting migratory birds.
Employees took to the parks and to the classroom to spread the railroad's environmental message as part of Union Pacific's annual month-long Earth Day initiative. This year's theme was Flyways and Byways, about the protection of migratory birds.
Activities included educating more than 1,000 students at nearly 40 schools with a goal of encouraging those students to actively apply Earth Day fundamentals in all aspects of their lives. Students attended a presentation on migratory bird patterns, made bird seed cookies and built paper (airplane) birds.
The 2013 Sustainability and Citizenship Report, released in May, highlights employees' role in preserving the environment, including sharing the railroad's environmental message in communities. UP employees also are encouraged to share tips and ideas for improving Union Pacific's sustainability, and in five years have submitted more than 2,600 ideas, with more than 40 percent leading to changes in programs and processes at the railroad.
