Rail Operations Update

Announcement Number: CN2014-14
Categories: General Announcements
Posted Date: May 7, 2014

Union Pacific continues to see steady improvement in rail operations following this winter's extreme weather events. The resources we have deployed over the past several months are aiding our recovery effort and allowing us to grow with our customers. Thanks to these resources and the hard work and dedication of our employees, we are seeing our network improve.

Train delay hours in our Northern region have been reduced significantly over the past several weeks. At its peak, train delay hours increased two and a half times compared to the beginning of the year. We have eliminated 85 percent of the excess delay, and we are showing continued improvement as we return to normalized operations.

We have also improved our velocity. Union Pacific has gained more than one mile per hour from our lowest velocity week, and we are now at an AAR-reported 24.4 mph. We expect velocity to keep improving as our network becomes more fluid.

With train delay hours down and velocity improving, our freight car inventory levels are going down and our overall service level continues to improve. We will focus on steady improvement in the weeks to come as our operations return to normal. We will continue to keep our customers updated on our progress. Thank you for your business and your support of Union Pacific.
