Posted Date: November 6, 2014

To Our Customers,

Union Pacific ended the month of October averaging 193,000 carloads per week, which was down slightly from September and 10 percent higher than October 2013. Network-level velocity remained steady, and we showed improvement in our Northern Region. As previously announced, we continue to experience operating challenges in the Pacific Northwest, and we are diligently working to improve service in the region. Additionally, early this week, we experienced a derailment in our Western Region which caused some delay. We have largely recovered from the derailment interruption. Fluidity across the majority of our network remains good.

Below are some additional network statistics from the previous week:

  • Weekly carloadings for the week ending Nov. 1, 2014, was 198,350, which was our highest week since the week ending Dec. 1, 2007, and 2 percent above the previous week.
  • AAR system velocity was 23.7 mph, up 0.2 mph from the previous week.
  • System terminal dwell was 29.4 hours, up 0.7 hours from the previous week.
  • In total, we had 293,500 cars online, which is down about 500 from last week.
