Weekly Service Update

To Our Customers,

The first winter storm of the season hit parts of our Northern Region this week. We activated our Winter Weather Command Centers, and we're managing through cold weather and snowfall across parts of our network. So far, the service interruptions have been minimal and our winter planning process has proved effective. Last week, velocity on our Western Region was impacted by a derailment on our Sunset corridor and continued operating challenges in the Pacific Northwest. Our Southern Region experienced some congestion at our Little Rock terminal as a result of a maintenance project. Fluidity across most parts of our network remains good.

Below are some additional network statistics from last week:

  • Carloadings for the week ending November 8, 2014 were 185,000. Fourth quarter carloadings to date are 8 percent higher than 2013.
  • AAR system velocity was 23.1 mph, down 0.6 mph from the previous week, primarily due to the aforementioned derailment and congestion in the PNW.
  • System terminal dwell was 30.1 hours, up 0.7 hours from the previous week.
  • In total, we had 296,700 cars online, which is up about 3,200 from the previous week.
