Union Pacific Railroad Replacing Steel Bridge Electrical System

Portland, Oregon, December 13, 2016

Union Pacific Railroad will keep the lift portion of Portland's Steel Bridge in the down position from Jan. 9-18, 2017, for electrical system maintenance work. The company worked with the U.S. Coast Guard and other Willamette-River stakeholders to plan the ten-day closure that will impact river traffic only. All other transportation modes across the Steel Bridge will remain in operation during this work.

Union Pacific is replacing the electrical system to improve lift bridge redundancies and simplify electrical system access for bridge maintenance staff.

Union Pacific owns the Steel Bridge and performs regular inspections to maintain its structural integrity. The company's bridges are inspected four times more than highway bridges. Inspectors carefully examine each bridge component looking for corrosion or cracks in trusses and decking. These inspections include detailed examinations above and below the bridge deck.

The Steel Bridge was built in 1912 and originally carried railroad traffic on the lower deck, with pedestrian, wagons and buggies on the upper deck.
