Union Pacific Railroad Named a Top Employer for Veterans

Omaha, Neb., April 14, 2014

Military Times EDGE named Union Pacific Railroad among the Best for Vets 2014 Employers. Union Pacific's No. 5 ranking marks the fourth consecutive year the railroad has been in the top 10.

"The skills veterans gain during military service can translate well into successful and rewarding railroad careers," said Roy Schroer, Union Pacific's vice president of Human Resources. "Veterans play a key role in nearly every aspect of Union Pacific, and we take pride recruiting, retaining and developing our veteran employees."

Military Times EDGE selected Union Pacific based on recruiting, mentoring, on-the-job training and spouse employment. In 2013, Union Pacific hired more than 800 military veterans, including 95 disabled veterans. These veterans make up approximately 25 percent of all 2013 new hires. Since 2005, 24 percent of Union Pacific's hires have been veterans, and overall, veterans comprise about 20 percent of the company's workforce.

Last year, Union Pacific participated in 11 virtual career fairs sponsored by military-based organizations, and in 2012, the company donated $60,000 from a veteran-hiring tax credit to the Wounded Warrior Project ®. Union Pacific received the inaugural Hiring Our Heroes Award for Post 9/11 Veteran Employment and Internships from the National Chamber Foundation and has been named a military-friendly employer more than 10 times by G.I. Jobs. The company is a member of the Army Reserve's Employee Partnership Initiative, supports the Army Partnership for Youth Success program, and is a past recipient of the Freedom Award, the U.S. government's highest employer recognition.
