E-Railsafe Program Helps Union Pacific Ensure Railroad Safety and Security Awareness

Omaha, Neb., April 29, 2009 – Continuing to improve the safety and security of the railroad is a core value at Union Pacific.  As part of the company's ongoing safety and security awareness efforts, Union Pacific has leveraged technology to provide enhanced benefits to the railroad and its contractors by implementing E-Railsafe.

E-Railsafe is just one of the programs Union Pacific utilizes to help ensure safety and security at its rail yards, shops, offices and along the company's 32,000 miles of track. The brainchild of Union Pacific and now used by Class I railroads in the U.S. and Canada, E-Railsafe ensures that third-party contractors working on railroad property do the following:

  • Complete a railroad safety training course;
  • Complete a railroad security awareness course;
  • Acquire a contractor photo identification credential, and
  • Pass a criminal history check.

"The safety and security of our employees, the communities in which we operate, and our customers are always of utmost importance to Union Pacific," said Dennis Jenson, assistant vice president and Union Pacific chief of police.

E-Railsafe also delivers benefits to contract companies by ensuring a professional background check that could be useful in making employment decisions, providing exposure to railroad safety and security awareness training, and offering a software program that can serve as a human resources employee documentation tool.

"We are proud of our safety and security awareness efforts at Union Pacific," Jenson said. "We continually work with employees, our local communities and customers to make our railroad safe and secure."
