Collective Action and Love Needed for Healing

By Lance Fritz, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Union Pacific Corporation

Our collective action and our love for each other are exactly what is needed for healing.

Tuesday’s mass murder in Uvalde, Texas, and the mass murder that took place in Buffalo, New York, on May 14 continue a pattern of heart shattering violence in America. In these events and in others before them, people going about their normal lives – individuals, children, parents, grandparents – experienced their last moment on earth facing thoughtless, cowardly menace. How can we have people among us who conclude random killing is the answer to their circumstance? I am deeply saddened, troubled, angry and discouraged. But not hopeless! I know we can and will work through this together.

What we need right now is to support each other, and our co-workers, friends and loved ones. We all need to talk it out, to express how we feel, to have those feelings recognized and to lessen the burden. And we need to be on the receiving end to hear, affirm, comfort and console. We have Union Pacific family in that community – please keep them and their neighbors in your prayers and close to your hearts. Every interaction counts right now – look for opportunities to be human with each other, to connect and be present.

If you need more, please contact your Employee Assistance Program or reach out to your local peer support. We urge you to join Union Pacific in providing financial support to the victims. I firmly believe our collective action and our love for each other are exactly what is needed for healing.
