The Central Pacific Railroad Company built the tracks of the new transcontinental railroad through the future townsite in December of 1868. Due to natural water sources, such as the Humboldt River, various creeks, and natural springs, the railroad company decided to make Carlin a division terminal, and machine shops and a depot were quickly constructed. Carlin was 445 miles from Sacramento where the railroad began.
Union Pacific honored Carlin on July 8, 2024 as a "Train Town USA" during a whistle-stop with Big Boy No. 4014.
