UPRR Refrigerated Boxcars - Fork Lift Gross Weight Restriction

Union Pacific is committed to supplying the refrigerated products marketplace with a consistent supply of properly functioning reefer cars. As information, we will be adding in the following conditions to the UP 1 item 65 to address the gross weight restrictions for use of fork lifts in UP ARMN cars as well as damage caused in the loading and unloading process. This new verbage will be put into the rules item with an effective date of 3/1/13.

  • Weight Restriction Requirements (25,000 lbs Max) for Fork-lift and Payload in UPRR Refrigerated Boxcars. The Total gross weight of fork-lift plus payload for 50' 70 and 90 ton, 64' and 72' reefers shall not exceed 25,000 lbs. The Shipper/Receiver is accountable for training of fork lift operators to properly load and unload rail cars.
  • Damage to Rail cars- Requirements for Reducing ARMN Car Side Wall Damage. Shipper/Receiver shall be responsible for the use of proper equipment, lift forks shall not exceed 48 inches in length.
  • Damage to Rail cars- Shipper/Receiver shall be responsible for damage to the rail car equipment during loading and unloading, with the exception of normal wear and tear. Shipper/Receiver will also be responsible for all consequential damages including loss of use, administrative fees, transportation and switching fees incurred to repair the car.
