Winter Weather Impact to Operations

Announcement Number: CN2023-8
Categories: General Announcements
Posted Date: February 3, 2023

To Our Customers,

Following is an update on weather impact to our network.

Northern Region

  • High winds from 55-65 mph are forecast for southeastern Wyoming and the Colorado Front Range. There is potential for high winds and blowing snow between Rawlins and Cheyenne, Wyoming, and will likely continue to impact crew transportation to our Powder River Basin coal lines.
  • We will continue to see freezing temperatures across much of the upper Midwest.
  • Weather forecasts are showing the potential for significant snowfall over portions of northern California.

Southern Region
This region has been significantly impacted by an ice storm between Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, southern Missouri and southern Illinois. Our engineering teams have safely cleared more than 400 downed trees from of our main tracks and installed more than 200 generators to assist with electrical power failures on our network. Road closures are impacting our ability to transport crews to operate trains.

We will continue to mitigate impacts to our operations over the coming days and adhere to our winter action protocols to respond quickly to any service disruptions. For customers with rail-served facilities located in the affected area, please be sure to clear all walkways and switches of snow and ice prior to the crew arriving.
