Rail Operations Update

Announcement Number: CN2017-15
Categories: General Announcements
Posted Date: February 16, 2017

To Our Customers,

Our network continues to be impacted by various weather-related challenges that have occurred over the past week. Additionally, we are watching a series of three storms that are forecasted to impact the western portion of our rail network, calling for heavy rain and snowfall. We will continue to monitor this weather system throughout the weekend.

Below is an update on the rail segments experiencing delays and outages. Customers should expect delays of 24-48 hours as we reroute shipments around each outage. For shipments going around multiple outages, customers can expect delays of 48-72 hours.

  • Wells, Nevada to Ogden, Utah and Oroville, California to Winnemucca, Nevada - Both segments remain out of service due to multiple areas of washed-out tracks. Extensive repairs are required to restore these segments of track to service and we currently do not have an estimated time of reopening.
  • Stockton to Sacramento, California - Crews have worked diligently to restore service and we anticipate reopening this corridor later this evening.
  • Roseville to Marysville, California - This segment is out of service with no estimated time of reopening.
  • I-5 Corridor - Trains are currently moving along this corridor; however, we continue to experience delays due to congestion between Chico and Stockton, California.

While we are able to reroute traffic around these outages, this creates congestion — similar to a two-lane highway being reduced to one lane. We appreciate your patience as we work to safely restore operations to these impacted areas.

Please contact the National Customer Service Center or your Union Pacific representative with any questions.
