More than two-thirds of Union Pacific's chemical business consists of intermediate liquid chemicals, plastics and liquid petroleum products traveling from the Gulf Coast and Rocky Mountain region to destinations throughout North America.
Soda ash shipments originate in southwestern Wyoming and California and move to markets in the east, the west and abroad. Approximately 35 percent of soda ash is exported, 33 percent is used in glass production and 16 percent is used in chemical production processes. Other uses for soda ash include soaps, detergents and paper.
Fertilizer movements originate on the Gulf Coast, as well as in the western United States and Canada, bound for major agricultural end-users in the Midwest and the western United States.
