North Louisiana & Arkansas Railroad NLA #620

Nature of Firm

The North Louisiana & Arkansas Railroad operates over 62 miles of line from McGehee, AR to Lake Providence, LA, formerly known as the Delta Southern Railroad. Twenty four miles of the NLA are owned by the short line and 41 miles are leased by the short line from the Lake Providence Port Authority Commission and Southeast Arkansas Economic Development District.

The rail line was initially built by the Memphis, Helena and Louisiana Railroad in 1878. The line was acquired by the St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern in 1901 and then by the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1905. Union Pacific acquired the line with the merger of Missouri Pacific and Union Pacific in 1982. In 1988, Union Pacific Railroad sold the line to Delta Southern Railroad (DSRR). The current owners acquired the line through an Offer of Financial Assistance (OFA) when the DSRR filed to abandon the line in 2011. The NLA began operations in August 2011 and is an indirect interchange through Arkansas Midland Railway Company (AKMD) with Union Pacfic at McGehee, AR. Traffic includes agricultural and industrial commodities.
