A Note about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

As America’s railroad, Union Pacific has an innate responsibility to speak out against all forms of discrimination while creating an environment where all can see themselves belonging and succeeding. This ideal is reflected in our philanthropic commitment, as we seek to advance the interests of underrepresented and underserved populations through our grantmaking and support organizations that reflect and foster diversity in the communities in which we live, work and serve.

We are committed to ensuring 100% of the grants awarded through Union Pacific’s Community Ties Giving Program support programs or organizations that demonstrate a commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion. DEI-aligned grants are defined as meeting one (or more) of the following:

  • The purpose of the grant is to advance the interests of an underrepresented or underserved population as they relate to Union Pacific’s priority cause areas; or
  • The organization is taking actions to instill DEI internally and/or within its programs

We recognize that demonstrating a commitment to DEI in the ways described above may take time and require additional resources. We offer the opportunity to apply for capacity building funding to integrate DEI practices internally and/or within community programs, as noted under Grant Objectives.

Anti-Discrimination Policy

Union Pacific’s Community Ties Giving Program, through Union Pacific Railroad, Union Pacific Corporation and Union Pacific Foundation, will consider providing charitable support to non-religious organizations that do not discriminate based on a person's race, color, sex, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, religion, past or present military service, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, genetic information, pregnancy, political affiliation, marital or familial status, or any other status protected by law ("protected status").

Notwithstanding the foregoing, religious organizations such as churches, mosques, and synagogues are eligible for funding if they have established a separate 501(c)(3) organization to operate the funded program AND the outreach program is offered to the general population regardless of religious affiliation and does not otherwise discriminate against individuals based upon their protected status. Organizations must be willing and able, if requested, to attest that they prohibit discrimination on these grounds in order to receive charitable support.
