Union Pacific and Dow Cooperate to Improve Rail Safety and Security

Combining technology and innovation, Union Pacific Railroad and Dow Chemical joined forces in 2007 to lead a group of more than 60 engineers, researchers and logistics specialists to improve rail safety and security.

Union Pacific and Dow signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) that outlines goals in eight critical areas of the chemical supply chain, with key innovations for event prevention and response planning, rail car design and shipment tracking.

A key part of the MOC, the Next Generation Rail Tank Car Project, delivered the first new tank cars off the assembly line in 2Q 2012, with a design that will provide 2-1/2 to 3 times better safety and security performance than cars in the existing fleet.
