The St. Louis & Iron Mountain Railroad constructed the main line in 1857 to De Soto from St. Louis. The line was constructed to bring iron ore from Iron Mountain, Mo., to St. Louis. The rail car shop in De Soto was constructed in 1865.
The Missouri Pacific merged with the St. Louis & Iron Mountain in 1917 and the Union Pacific and Missouri Pacific merged in 1982.
