Ice Storm Projected for South-Central United States

Announcement Number: CN2015-2
Categories: General Announcements
Posted Date: January 9, 2015

To Our Customers,

Current weekend weather forecasts are predicting ice accumulations of up to half an inch stretching from central Texas northeast to the Ohio River Valley (see map below). Metro areas such as Dallas/Ft. Worth, Ft. Smith, Ark., and Evansville, Ind., could be impacted. Surrounding areas may see lighter accumulations of ice. Our primary concern regarding the storm is with potential power outages caused by falling trees and power lines. Union Pacific is preparing for the storm by distributing generators across the potential impact area and working with local power companies to establish communication channels. We also are concerned about frozen switches and crew mobility in the parts of the potential impact area that are unaccustomed to extremely cold temperatures and frozen precipitation. At this time, we do not know how much, if any, impact this storm will have on railroad operations. Additional updates will be sent as conditions warrant.

Please contact the National Customer Service Center or your Union Pacific representative with any questions.
