High Winds Impacting Operations

Announcement Number: CN2021-71
Categories: General Announcements
Posted Date: December 16, 2021

To Our Customers,

High wind gusts, along with several tornadoes, impacted the Midwest and upper Midwest sections of our network yesterday. We experienced several service interruptions across our system that are impacting overall operations:

  • Yesterday’s storms impacted Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The storms produced the highest volume of hurricane-force wind gusts ever recorded in a single day across the entire United States.
  • The storms generated 55 hurricane-force thunderstorms with wind gusts of 70-110 mph.
  • Twenty tornadoes were reported throughout Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota.
  • A rockslide in Northern California is impacting operations in the west.

Customers with shipments moving through the impacted areas can expect delays between 24 and 36 hours as we begin to work off the backlog of traffic and resume normal operations.

If you have any questions, please contact Customer Care & Support at 800-272-8777 or your Union Pacific representative.
