Service Update

To Our Customers,

While Operating metrics have trended in the right direction since mid-April, we experienced an expected and temporary setback this past weekend due to Father’s Day and the Juneteenth observance. Train crew layoffs, as well as the impact of a significant derailment near Topeka, Kansas, resulted in more trains held and a decline in Car Velocity. The entire Union Pacific team is working together to recover from these events and improve network fluidity, while making plans to handle anticipated train crew layoffs over the Fourth of July holiday.

We filed a revised service plan with the Surface Transportation Board Thursday, June 23, detailing the deliberate steps we are taking to improve service and mitigate network congestion. Our goal is to transparently answer the board’s questions, many of which are the result of concerns from our customers, outline our recovery plan and the metrics to measure success.

Here’s a look at the results as of June 17 versus mid-April and May.

As always, our metrics are publicly available at www.up.com and reported weekly to the American Association of Railroads.

We continue to work toward our hiring goals and creating action plans that are targeted at balancing the need to bring back cars as we increase Car Velocity and reduce cycle times.
