Chicago Intermodal Simplification Update - Global 1 Closure

Announcement Number: IM2020-207
Categories: All Intermodal
Posted Date: November 30, 2020

Dear Premium Customers,

Over the past 18 months, Union Pacific has worked to further simplify our Chicago intermodal operations. In early 2019, we took an end-to-end look at our intermodal network to find ways to optimize the supply chain. The final key change in that plan is to close our Global 1 terminal and consolidate those operations into Global 2. Our intent over the next 60 days is to shift train pairs from Global 1 to Global 2 in a thoughtful manner. Watch for additional announcements with specific details, including effective dates.

Union Pacific has invested significant capital at our Global 2 terminal to expand and simplify operations for our domestic intermodal customers. With this investment, Global 2 has been transformed into a state-of-the-art facility capable of accommodating additional capacity and throughput. Key aspects of the Global 2 expansion are:

  • Significant increase in terminal parking capacity with over 2,500 paved parking stalls, in addition to overflow parking space
  • More terminal lift capacity with new and rebuilt working and support tracks and additional rubber tire gantry cranes
  • New automated (AGS) outgate and Wolf Road and Lake Street

These changes will allow us to further improve our operations, providing you with a more consistent, reliable service product. This consolidation will also help you work more efficiently, reducing the number of terminals to manage for drayage vendors, waybilling, and in some cases, chassis management.

As with previous changes, we will be working with you through every step of this transition to make it as seamless as possible. We trust the result of this change will be a stronger, more reliable network that ultimately serves you better. If you have any questions, please contact your Union Pacific representative.

Sincerely,
