Intermodal Terminal Reservation: International Business Integration

Dear Premium Customers,

On August 6, 2019, we launched our modernized Intermodal Terminal Reservation (ITR) system at select terminals for domestic customers. ITR is a planning system that matches gate activity to train capacity in an effort to maximize the customer experience and ensure terminal fluidity. In early August, we also introduced Intermodal Flow Optimization (IFO) to help support port and inland terminal fluidity for our international customers.

As we've operated both systems in tandem, we are committed to delivering a more seamless experience to our customers by integrating both international and domestic shipments into ITR.

The objectives of ITR are to:

  • Give customers visibility to available terminal and train capacity.
  • Enable better planning for your end-to-end supply chain.
  • Provide a consistent and reliable transportation experience with Union Pacific.
  • Ensure terminal fluidity.

Utilizing ITR for all intermodal shipments will allow us to achieve these mutual objectives. Beginning September 30, 2019, international customers will have the ability to request reservations at LATC, Brooklyn, Denver and Kansas City. At the remaining international terminals, ITR will be phased in throughout the balance of 2019. Our Customer Care & Support team will be available in the interim to help train customers on how to use the ITR system.
