Nature of Firm
CSS provides freight service from South Bend, Indiana westward to Kensington Yard in Chicago (91 miles). Other principle cities served by CSS include New Carlisle, Michigan City, Burns Harbor, Gary, East Chicago and Hammond. CSS also serves the Illinois International Port of Chicago. Direct connections are made with UP, CSXT, NS, CN and several switching carriers including BRC, IHB and B&OCT. Traffic consists of coal, steel, paper, scrap metal and manufactured products. Passenger service is operated over the line by a local commuter transit authority.
History
The line was built by the Chicago & Indiana Air Line Railway, incorporated in December 1901 and reorganized in 1925 as the Chicago, Lake Shore & South Bend Railway. CSS was incorporated on July 14, 1925 to purchase the CLS&SB at foreclosure sale. CSS purchased the Kensington & Eastern Railroad Company from the Illinois Central. This line had previously been leased from IC by CSS and operated from the Indiana/Illinois state line to its connection with IC at Kensington 115th Street Chicago. The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, operator of the passenger commuter service, owns the main track from South Bend to the Indiana/ Illinois state line and CSS owns the yards, sidings, and other industry lead tracks along the line.
