History

The IATR purchase the Mason City division of the Iowa Terminal Railroad in 1987. Iowa Terminal had been formed in 1961 to purchase the property of the Mason City & Clear Lake Railroad. The Mason City line opened in 1897 and provided passenger service until 1936. The line is an original interurban electric railroad, probably the last of its kind in the United States. River City Junction in the stage and movie “The Music Man” has its roots in Clear Lake Junction where the road crossed Mason City & Fort Dodge Railroad (then the Chicago Great Western) when it was built.
