History

This line is part of a railroad opened in 1891 by the New Orleans, Fort Jackson and Grand Isle Railroad. That line was combined with the New Orleans Southern Railway in 1911 to form the New Orleans, Southern and Grand Isle Railway. The NOS&GI was sold under foreclosure to the New Orleans & Lower Coast Railroad in September, 1916. That company came under the control of the Missouri Pacific ten years later and was merged with MP in 1978. UP sold the property between Gretna to Myrtle Grove, LA to RailTex, with short line service starting on March 17, 1991. NOGC is now owned by Rio Grande Pacific Corporation, who purchased the property from RailTex and began operations on April 25, 1999. On October 19, 2003, NOGC leased and started operation on the Westwego to Gouldsboro Yard segment and the Hooper Spur.
