Nature of Firm

SERA operates 105 miles of track in four locations, three of which connect to UP. The Oakdale Division operates from a connection with UP at Oakdale, CA to Sonora, CA. The Woodland Subdivision operates from a connection with UP at West Sacramento to Woodland and includes the Port of Sacramento. The Santa Cruz Division operates from a connection with UP at Watsonville, CA to Davenport, CA. SERA also interchanges with BNSF at Riverbank, CA and at West Sacramento. Traffic consists of lumber and lumber products, grain and grain products, gypsum, wallboard, canned goods, plastics, chemicals, steel, ethanol and propane.

History

Sierra Northern Railway was formed in August 2003 through the merger of two Northern California shortline railroads—the Sierra Railroad Company and the Yolo Shortline Railroad. The West Sacramento to Clarksburg line received abandonment authority in January 2005. The Santa Cruz Branch was leased to SERA on December 30, 2009.
