The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a is a global conservation organization dedicated to conserving the lands and waters on which all life depends. Guided by science, TNC creates innovative, on-the-ground solutions to our world’s toughest challenges so that nature and people can thrive together. Through a collaborative approach that engages local communities, governments, the private sector and other partners, TNC is tackling climate change, conserving lands, waters and oceans at an unprecedented scale, and providing food and water sustainably. Since its inception in 1951, TNC has grown to a staff of over 400 scientists and garnered over a million members worldwide and has made a significant conservation impact across 79 countries and territories. About Our Partnership
The future of our business, communities and planet depends on addressing climate change and its impacts and preserving the health of our environment. The Environmental Sustainability National Partnership is one of many environmental initiatives Union Pacific has undertaken since announcing its Climate Action Plan in 2021. Union Pacific is proud to support The Nature Conservancy on three community-level projects over the next three years.
- Protect and enhance grassland within the upper Elkhorn River watershed (Omaha, NE). This project will help landowners who own marginal row crop acres enroll in a long-term conservation program that involves restoring those acres to grass and trees. This work will increase water quality, capture carbon, reduce local flooding and reduce downstream flooding.
- Rewild the San Joaquin Valley (Tulare County, CA). This project will rewild former agricultural lands that are voluntarily being followed to reduce water use and restore them to upland habitat for critically threatened and endangered species.
- Reconnect Critical Landscapes for Watershed Health in North Texas (Dallas, TX). This project will improve watershed health, climate resilience and expand grasslands restoration in the Upper Basin of the Trinity River, the watershed of the fastest growing metroplex in the United States. Bringing together multiple conservation strategies and partners, this donation will advance community resilience, protect biodiversity, secure water supplies, and build a more resilient future for people and nature across North Texas.
