Nature of Firm
DRIR owns or operates seven miles of switching track in Denver, CO, including four miles of former Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (of which UP owns 3.2 miles and DRIR has operating right to serve the shippers). DRIR owes and operates two former UP industrial switch areas known as the Stock Yard Lead and North Washington Industrial Track. DRIR has connections with both UP and BNSF.
When the Rock Island went out of business, the Denver Terminal Railroad Company (DTMR) took over, but then sold the line to Denver Railway, Inc (DRI) on August 1, 1989. DRI defaulted on loan agreement and ceased operations, and the ICC issued a Directed Service Order authorizing the Great Western Railway Company (doing business as Platt Valley Railway (PVR)) to operate over the DRI. The PVR elected not to operate the line when the Service Order expired. In 1993, the original operators, the Denver Terminal Railroad Company (DTMR), began operating the line again as the Denver Rock Island. In 2005, DRIR have agreed to an exchange of rail lines in Denver. Under the exchange agreement, UP will acquire Sandown-Belt Junction line from DRIR. In turn, DRIR will acquire the lines known as the Stock Yard Lead and North Washington Industrial Track.
