Nature of Firm

IAIS operates freight service from Chicago (Blue Island), IL to Council Bluffs, IA (552 miles). In addition, there are several branch lines: Rock Island to Milan, IL – 10.5 miles; Altoona to Prairie City, IA – 13.8 miles; Hancock Jct to Hancock, IA - .4 miles; Hancock Jct to Oakland, IA – 5.5 miles; and Bureau Jct to Peoria, IL – 42.7 miles. Traffic includes agricultural products, grain, fertilizer, lumber, sand, plastics, paper, coal, chemicals, steel and COFC/TOFC.

History

The company started operations over the former Iowa Railroad (former CRI&P) lines early in October 1984. In June 1987, IAIS began leased operations over the Lincoln & Southern Railroad (owned by B. F. Goodrich Co.) between Peoria and Bureau Jct, IL. On June 27, 1995 the company acquired a line of the former Des Moines Union Railway from the CNW. The physical property was owned by Heartland Corporation, a holding company controlled by on-line shippers. On January 2, 2004 Railroad Development Corporation (RDC) purchased the IAIS and the assets of Heartland Rail Corporation.

The IAIS purchased the Great Western Railway of Iowa (CBGR) in July 2006 and the Lincoln and Southern RR (L&S) on December 31, 2006.
