Union Pacific’s Cerwin Fleming, general manager, Transportation, was recently named one of Profiles in Diversity Journal’s Black Leadership Award 2023 winners, recognizing dedication to uplifting diverse voices industrywide and beyond.

Rising through the leadership ranks over his 13-year Union Pacific career, Fleming started as a brakeperson shortly after graduating college with a degree in civil engineering. Now, he oversees 1,147 miles of track across 18 subdivisions as general manager of the railroad’s Chicago Service Unit, working to ensure more than 1,800 employees go home safe to their families every day.
An advocate for more women joining the transportation industry, Fleming is a member of LEAD (Lead, Educate, Achieve, Develop), Union Pacific’s employee resource group dedicated to increasing opportunities for women to be recruited, engaged and advanced as Union Pacific leaders. Empowering and fostering opportunities for women, he facilitates tours at Union Pacific yards for high school students with an interest in railroad careers. Fleming’s leadership style is influenced by his graduation from Union Pacific’s Leadership Development Program, a seven-month program focused on developing various aspects of leadership and encouraging cross-department collaboration.
The honorees will be featured in Profiles in Diversity Journal’s fourth quarter issue, scheduled for late December publication.
