Union Pacific’s 18 Safety Manager of the Year Award recipients include, clockwise from left: Allan Breier, manager-Mechanical Maintenance, receives his plaque from Senior Manager Gregory Evans; Marco Acevedo, manager-Mechanical Maintenance; Jeff Lawrence, senior manager-Safety and Esser Williams, manager-Train Operations.

At Union Pacific Railroad, safety is a shared commitment – one that starts with our team and extends to every community we serve. Each year, the railroad honors exceptional people leaders who inspire and empower teams while championing safe, efficient operations.

“It’s important for everyone to go home safe each day, so this award is a great honor,” said Esser Williams, manager-Train Operations, Gulf Coast Service Unit. “This achievement speaks to the strength of our local team and the sense of community among railroaders.”

Williams oversees operations between Livonia and Avondale, Louisiana, and has more than 25 years of service.

Allan Breier, manager-Mechanical Maintenance, shares the same sentiment, noting the award reflects a collective effort.

“I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished,” Breier said. “When expectations are clear and consistent, everyone knows how to get the job done safely.”

Breier leads two rail car departments in Illinois – the Alton and Southern Railway (A&S) in East St. Louis and Dupo. His focus on accountability and engagement has driven results: A&S marked two years injury free last year while Dupo reached four.

“This recognition highlights the dedication both teams bring every day,” Breier said. “Their efforts directly support everyone’s safety, and I’m focused on keeping it that way.”

Congratulations to Union Pacific’s 2024 Safety Managers of the year. Winners were recognized locally with custom plaques and profiles in their employee newsletter.
