Operating Plan for Possible Work Stoppage

To Our Customers,
Union Pacific continues to have active discussions with the unions to reach a voluntary agreement before the cooling off period ends on Friday, September 16, 2022, at 12:01 a.m. We remain hopeful for a prompt resolution, but if a national labor strike does occur, we have a plan to safely reduce operations and secure our customers’ goods.
At this time, network operations continue to run as normal, with exception of any previously announced embargoes such as the one for TIH, PIH and time sensitive commodities. You may reference our Embargo page or the AAR Embargo System for active embargoes.
In the event of a work stoppage, Union Pacific will immediately activate plans to safely cease all train operations. If the work stoppage continues beyond 24 hours, we will issue embargoes for all rail traffic. When the strike ends, we will lift embargos or issue permits to enable our network to safely resume operations as quickly as possible.
Intermodal and automotive customers should be aware that a work stoppage could impact our ability to keep ramps open. To the extent possible, intermodal and automotive ramp gate operations will continue as normal in the first 24 hours after a work stoppage. After 24 hours of a work stoppage, we will discontinue all ingate operations, though remain open for outgate operations.
Union Pacific continues to push for prompt resolution of the labor agreements so we can continue to provide rail service to our customers. The status of the negotiations can change quickly and we will continue to provide updates as they become available.
