Winter Weather Impact on Operations

Announcement Number: CN2023-14
Categories: General Announcements
Posted Date: March 1, 2023

To Our Customers,

Various weather systems continue to impact our network from northern California, through the Midwest and southern portions of our network. Following is an operations update by region:

  • California & Nevada – In the past 48 hours, heavy snow between 3-6 feet fell in the Sierra Mountain range, between Sacramento, California, and Reno, Nevada. Snow has diminished, but another storm is projected to move through the area this weekend, delivering similar amounts of precipitation. Crews have cleared numerous downed trees and snow slides from the tracks and are clearing snow from the right of way in preparation of the next storm system.
  • Midwest – A winter storm will move through eastern Iowa, northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin late this week, bringing heavy snow, ice, high winds and severe weather. The highest accumulations of 12-18 inches will occur in northeastern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin.
  • Texas, Louisiana & Arkansas – Scattered severe thunderstorms will develop Thursday afternoon across east Texas and Oklahoma, spreading into Arkansas and Louisiana, Thursday evening. The strongest storms may produce isolated tornadoes, wind gusts up to 70 mph and local flash flooding. Storms will weaken early Friday morning.

We will continue to mitigate impacts to our operations over the coming days and adhere to our winter action protocols to respond quickly and safely to any service disruptions. Customers with shipments moving through the impacted states should anticipate delays between 24 to 48 hours. For customers with rail-served facilities located in the affected area, please continue to clear all walkways and switches of snow and ice prior to the crew arriving.
