Interline Service Changes to Eastbound Intermodal Traffic Handled by UP and NS

Announcement Number: IM2019-70
Categories: All Intermodal
Posted Date: May 31, 2019

Dear Premium Customers,

In December, Union Pacific communicated an ongoing initiative with Norfolk Southern Railway to optimize our interline intermodal service. In order to build a safe, reliable and consistent network, inclusive of our interline service products, we are excited to announce an increase in the number of steel-wheel service offerings with Norfolk Southern.

In January and February, Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern rationalized small volume lanes to reduce train complexity. At that time, we also designed new high-density blocking that will increase the velocity on our interchange at our major interline gateways. The result of this initiative will be a more fluid and less complex interchange between the two rail carriers in Chicago and Memphis, which will reduce transit times and improve customers' experience.

The changes to our interline service products will be effective on Monday, July 1, 2019. To assist customers, we are providing a list of the open interline lanes. Please carefully review this list as there are four small volume lanes that will close to interline service. Additionally, there are 18 lanes that will shift to geographically similar terminals in order to optimize interchange efficiency. The last day to waybill and ingate for these lanes is Friday, June 28, 2019.

Please contact your Union Pacific representative with any questions.

Sincerely,

Premium Marketing and Sales
