1st Avenue Crossing Closing for Construction April 16th

Chicago, Ill., March 23, 2018

The 1st Avenue rail crossing in Maywood, Illinois, will close on April 16, allowing crews to install a third rail line, as well as perform utility and grading work. Drivers will be able to cross the tracks at 5th Avenue or in the neighboring River Forest and Oak Park communities. The temporary closure is expected to last eight weeks, weather permitting.

The work is part of a long-term project to add a third rail line on the company’s Metra West Line from River Forest to Melrose Park and from West Chicago to Geneva. The additional main line will allow 59 Metra trains and 70 freight trains using the line to operate simultaneously, a critical step toward improving the line’s reliability and efficiency.

Drivers may experience delays during the crossing closure and are asked to follow the posted detour, as well as be aware of, and courteous to crews working in the area.
