Plans to Secure Hazardous and Other Security-Sensitive Shipments Due to Labor Uncertainty

Announcement Number: CN2022-50
Categories: General Announcements
Posted Date: September 9, 2022

To Our Customers,

Union Pacific, along with the other U.S. Class I freight railroads, is actively meeting with labor unions to seek agreements before the 30-day cooling off period ends on September 16, 2022.

Today the Association of American Railroads (AAR) issued the following statement.

On Monday September 12, Union Pacific will begin to secure hazardous and other security-sensitive materials on our property for the safety of our customers, employees and communities we serve. In addition, we will embargo new shipments of hazardous commodities until those shipments can safely arrive at their destination. This is a proactive measure we are taking ahead of any potential work stoppages due to an impasse in labor negotiations. A list of the specific commodities affected can be viewed here. You may reference our Embargo page or the AAR Embargo System for active embargoes.

Union Pacific is committed to working with the rail unions to reach a voluntary labor agreement as quickly as possible. It is in the best interest of all parties to resolve the negotiations and prevent service disruptions. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
