Upcoming Deadline for Carta Porte Waybill Compliance

Announcement Number: CN2023-28
Categories: General Announcements
Posted Date: May 17, 2023

To Our Customers,

Union Pacific has continued to conduct Carta Porte waybill compliance checks before the Mexican Tax Authority begins implementing fines and rejections at the border for non-compliant shipments on August 1, 2023. In preparation for this, Union Pacific and all Class I Railroads that interchange with us for Mexico cross-border shipments will start actively checking EDI submissions and rejecting non-compliant EDI starting June 26, 2023, to avoid delays and border congestion.

Two Incremental Carta Porte EDI Fields
Last month, we provided an update on two incremental Carta Porte EDI fields required by the Mexican railroads. We have been advised that the effective date for shippers to meet these two new requirements has been pushed back to January 15, 2024. Please refer to our previous announcement for additional information on these EDI requirements.

Summary
To avoid shipment delays, penalties from the Mexican government, and document delay charges, it is imperative that customers act now to ensure billing information into and out of Mexico is compliant with Carta Porte requirements by June 26, 2023.
