Update: Southwest Monsoon Weather Impacting Operations

Announcement Number: CN2023-51
Categories: General Announcements
Posted Date: September 3, 2023

To Our Customers,

Intense monsoon rains and thunderstorms in the southern California and southwest Arizona regions continue to impact operations. We continue to work to restore service in the following areas:

  • Yuma Subdivision: We have restored service to one of our two main tracks. We anticipate opening the second main track Monday morning.
  • Calexico Subdivision: Our Calexico subdivision remains out of service. Our teams are assessing the situation, and we will provide updates as they become available.
  • Cima Subdivision: Late Saturday night, we encountered significant flash flooding on our Cima Subdivision, between Las Vegas, Nevada, and Yermo, California, causing impacts to operations in this area. We are actively working to address the situation and anticipate the main track to be open Monday morning.

Although we have returned service to some of the impacted segments, it will take multiple days to work through the train congestion. For safety purposes, as these lines reopen, segments will have temporary slow order speed restrictions. The effort will also require us to realign locomotive power and crews to the region. Due to these circumstances, customers should expect delays through the week. We will continue to provide updates on the progress of our service restoration efforts.
