Hurricane Beryl Impacting Operations in Texas

Announcement Number: CN2024-15
Categories: General Announcements
Posted Date: July 9, 2024

To Our Customers,

Hurricane Beryl made landfall near Rockport, Texas – just south of Houston – early Monday morning. Beryl continued to move through the Houston area as a tropical storm with strong winds and heavy rains. Due to the strong coordination of our Engineering, Signal and Operations Teams, our recovery efforts have gone extremely well. We are proud to report that all impacted track segments, with the exception of the Galveston area, have been quickly restored to service. However, we will experience service variability until commercial power is fully restored and all roadways are accessible for transporting crews. Customers with rail shipments moving through the impacted area should anticipate some delays.

As we continue assessing the impact to our network, the following is a summary of the current conditions:

  • Operations have resumed between Angleton and Brownsville, Texas.
  • Water remains over the rail near Virginia Point and Galveston Island.
  • Fallen trees, downed power lines and other storm damage have led to numerous road closures limiting travel to affected areas. Additional contract drivers are available to supplement transportation needs.
  • Multiple locations are currently experiencing power outages due to a loss of commercial power. We are working closely with local power companies and contractors in the impacted areas to restore service. Meanwhile, we continue to deploy and install generators until commercial power is restored.
  • We continue to coordinate recovery efforts through our Command Center.

Customers in the affected area with facilities or tracks out of service should open a case in Case Management (user ID and password required). Please refer to the detailed instructions on our Hurricane Planning and Recovery page so we are aware of these outages.

We will continue to provide updates as more information is made available regarding our rail network. If you have any questions, please contact Customer Care & Support at 800-272-8777 or your Union Pacific representative.
