Contraband Notification Process

Union Pacific would like to enlist the help of our customers to protect your facilities and employees as well as ours, and to safeguard customer materials transported on our network. If you discover drugs or other contraband in a rail car, please contact your local law enforcement agency as soon as possible to take custody of the contraband. Union Pacific Police should also be contacted at the number below.

Please also notify Union Pacific Police, even if drugs or other contraband are not discovered, but evidence of smuggling activity is noted. Examples of smuggling activity might include any unusual rail car modifications, such as holes cut in a centerbeam or false walls or floors. This information is important for our ongoing collaboration with U.S. Customs & Border Protection and the Mexican railroads to reduce the illegal transport of drugs and other contraband.

Most importantly, the safety of our customers and our employees is our top priority. If you witness smuggling activity in progress, including individuals on, or in, a rail car removing drugs or other contraband, do not intervene. Contact your local law enforcement agency immediately. Mexico is an important business partner to the United Sates; actions like these will allow us to continue providing our customers with the best interline service to Mexico.

Union Pacific Police should be contacted through the UP Response Management Communication Center (RMCC) at 888-UPRR-COP or 888-877-7267. Or send an e-mail to RMCC_IN@up.com or fax to 402-271-4051. When contacting RMCC, please provide the following information:

  • Date of discovery of contraband/evidence of smuggling activity
  • Date rail car was received at destination
  • Location where discovery occurred
  • Rail car identification number
  • Summary explanation of what occurred
  • Photographs that depict the method of smuggling and the external packaging of the contraband

Thank you for your cooperation. Working together, we'd like to heighten awareness and eliminate this illegal activity along our railroad.
