Winter Weather Update to Operations

Announcement Number: CN2023-1
Categories: General Announcements
Posted Date: January 2, 2023

To Our Customers,

Extreme weather continues to impact portions of our network.

Impact by Region

  • California – Heavy rains are expected to continue in much of coastal and central California with the potential for additional flash flooding. Heavy snows will continue to fall in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range with the potential for incremental interstate and road closures.
  • Midwest / Great Plains – A powerful storm system will swing through the Central U.S. early this week, bringing heavy snow, freezing rain and ice to Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Weather embargo UP130022 is still in effect.
  • South – Severe storms throughout eastern Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and southern Missouri will have the potential for isolated tornadoes, wind gusts, and local flash flooding.

Customers should continue to anticipate extended delays on shipments in the affected areas until conditions improve and severe weather recovery efforts are complete. In anticipation of weather-related impacts to our network, we have positioned resources and materials to address any potential disruptions as quickly and safely as possible.

We ask that customers with rail-served facilities in the affected areas clear all walkways and switches of snow and ice prior to crew arrival. For more winter weather preparedness tips, visit the Winter Weather Action Plan for Rail Shippers page.

If your rail-served facility is not able to receive service or you have any questions, please contact Customer Care & Support at 800-272-8777 or your Union Pacific representative.
