UP Dispatchers Rejected Unions Nine Times
UP dispatchers have rejected unionization nine times in the relatively recent past. As some of you who voted in previous elections know, nine times unions have attempted to persuade UP dispatchers to relinquish control over their work lives to unions, and nine times UP dispatchers have chosen to remain part of the management team. You may indicate your preference to remain part of the management team by simply not completing an authorization card, or A-card. Without a sufficient showing of interest, no union can force an election.
UP dispatchers first rejected unionization efforts in 1985, when the union failed to make a sufficient showing of support for an election and its application was dismissed by the National Mediation Board (NMB) in early 1985. Subsequent attempts to unionize UP dispatchers failed in 1988, 1996, 1997, 2006, 2008, 2014, 2018 and, most recently, in 2020, when UP dispatchers once again decided to stay part of the management team.
Some people just won’t take your “No” vote for an answer. Again, union organizers are trying to put a new spin on an old message, but the wisdom and the benefits of remaining management remain constant. UP has maintained the best dispatching team in the business throughout all of these organizing efforts.
