To Our Customers,

We are committed to keeping you informed as we continue to work toward easing mainline congestion. Until normal service levels return, you can expect a weekly update, just like this, explaining the progress we are making.

Union Pacific is closely monitoring three key Operating metrics as indicators of network fluidity and reporting weekly to the Surface Transportation Board.

Last Week’s Progress: April 29 through May 6

  • Operating Car Inventory: Removed 2,254 cars from our inventory, which reflects active inventory minus cars placed at customers’ facilities.
  • Car Velocity: Increased from 177 to 184 miles per day.
  • Train Speed: Decreased slightly from 23.4 mph to 23.3 mph.

Progress April 16 through May 6

  • Operating Car Inventory: Removed 8,321 cars from our inventory.
  • Car Velocity: Increased from 177 to 184 miles per day.
  • Train Speed: Increased from 22.9 mph to 23.3 mph.

As always, our Operating key metrics are reported weekly to the American Association of Railroads.
