Freight Shipments Score with Rail

Why do freight shippers choose rail? Here are a few of the reasons:

  • It’s green (kind of like turf). Trains are the most environmentally responsible way to ship freight over land. On average, U.S freight railroads can move one ton of freight nearly 500 miles on a single gallon of diesel fuel, generating a carbon footprint that is 75% less than trucks.
  • You can save money (and spend it on football tickets instead?). Trains typically cost less than trucks, especially over long distances. Want to compare? Find out how much it would cost to ship your freight by rail.
  • You can ship almost anything by rail. The list of things railroads can ship is much longer than the list of things they can’t. Personal property, passengers, pets and other living things are out (including mascots), but just about everything else is in.
  • You can ship almost anywhere (even the stadium). Railroads haul freight across North America and other continents, too. Some of those shipments go to ports, where ocean carriers haul them overseas. So technically, railroads help shipments travel worldwide. You can even ship by rail if you don’t have access to tracks.
  • You can ship a LOT at once. One rail car can carry the same amount of cargo as 3-4 trucks. Which would you rather have, a truckload of beer or a rail car?
