Large Retina | Inside Track: Insights: Union Pacific de Mexico 30 Years

We are proud to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Union Pacific’s Mexico franchise, which began May 8, 1992.

Union Pacific started doing business in Mexico before the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) went into effect in 1994. NAFTA was key to strengthening supply chains across North America, creating competitive advantage as a region, resulting in growth of trade flows within all three countries.

Union Pacific has been a significant protagonist of this growth as a transportation carrier of goods traded between the United States and Mexico, in segments that include grain, beer, automotive products, appliances, metals, coal and finished fuels, among others.

Union Pacific has also been part of the transformation of Mexico's rail infrastructure. We have witnessed the Mexican rail industry’s progress during privatization after NAFTA. We also invested in our border connections and operations dedicated to meeting the growing demand for rail transportation between the two countries. Union Pacific’s access to Mexico through our six main rail gateways allows us to collaborate closely with both Mexican railroads (Union Pacific owns a 26% stake in Ferromex), sharing our experience, support and commitment to an efficient U.S.-Mexico rail border operation.

We would not be able to tell our story without one of our most important stakeholders: Our customers. We are deeply thankful for the confidence our Mexican customers have in us, as together we build success stories that help them reach North American markets, capitalizing on the strong rail network connectivity between the Mexican railroads and Union Pacific. Key to our customer-centric efforts is establishing close relationships with our business partners to better understand their needs and how we can help them achieve their goals. We are proud of our culturally comprehensive approach and will continue helping Mexican industries grow and expand their market reach.

Looking back to 1992, we see the economic revitalization and growth Mexico has experienced since the reshaping of the rail network and are very proud to have been part of the success and transformation of this great country. We believe the region will continue to benefit from our continued combined efforts to grow and build a solid region, creating transportation solutions that meet industry needs on both sides of the border.

This is how we will collaborate to fulfill our region’s needs – by creating value. This is how we will Serve, Grow and Win – Together. This is why we are Union Pacific de Mexico.
