Union Pacific’s legendary Big Boy No. 4014 took center stage in Philadelphia on the Fourth of July as tens of thousands gathered for the America250 Block Party, commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary.

By expanding market access, improving delivery of farm supplies and adding new port options east and west, the Union Pacific-Norfolk Southern merger will help producers move what they grow further and faster.

Union Pacific is proving that moving more freight doesn't require running more trains. Through smarter operations, data-driven technology and a relentless focus on safety, the railroad is transporting greater volumes with fewer trains while continuing to improve performance in critical areas.

A stronger national rail network will help American businesses compete more effectively, while simplifying shipping and preserving union jobs. The combination will improve supply chain efficiency and lower shipping costs. Vena reiterated Union Pacific’s commitment to job protection for union employees. 

With the merger, we see opportunities to shift significant business from road to rail. Trucks move 43% of all freight ton miles today. To capture that market share, we will need to compete not only against trucks, but also against other railroads. We expect to win.

Union Pacific delivered a record year for safety, and the railroad is building on that progress by advancing technology that reduces risk and supports employees in every aspect of the operation. The focus is constant: creating a safer operating environment by equipping employees with tools that help them do their jobs more safely and efficiently.

The critics have a convenient story: The UP-NS merger will stifle competition and leave you with fewer choices and higher rates. They tell it with great confidence. There’s just one problem — it’s wrong. And we don’t have to argue about it in the abstract, because we just lived through it.
