Status of the Railroad - A Message from Kenny Rocker, EVP, Marketing & Sales

Announcement Number: CN2025-3
Categories: General Announcements
Posted Date: January 29, 2025

To Our Customers,

Union Pacific had a strong finish to 2024, driven by execution of our Safety, Service and Operational Excellence = Growth strategy. In Safety, both derailment and personal injury rates improved significantly. Service also improved, with 2024 marking an all-time record low for terminal dwell. Quarter-over quarter, we saw better freight car velocity and improvement in our Service Performance Index (SPI). Manifest SPI reached a record 98% in December, while Intermodal improved throughout the quarter, ending December at 97%, the year’s second highest level.

Our emphasis on Operational Excellence has carried into 2025. We’ve started the year with a solid service product. Volume is strong and the network is running well. Although Mother Nature has challenged us a few times and will likely do so again, buffer resources are at the ready and we remain resilient with an intense focus on meeting our customer commitments, for the service we’ve sold.

Our Metrics
Our latest weekly metrics for the week ending January 24, 2025, are holding steady. The Operating team has successfully managed the recent weather challenges with the extreme cold and unusual weather in the South. Railroading is an outdoor sport and the team is prepared to handle whatever comes next.

  • Freight Car Velocity – 212 miles per day
  • Train Velocity – 19.3 miles per hour
  • Terminal Dwell – 23.3 hours

New Resources
Rail Safety Customer Handbook: Earlier this month, we released the upgraded Rail Safety Customer Handbook. This handbook is meant to help customers interact with Union Pacific, as our goal is to keep customers safe and provide consistent and reliable service. Please refer to this enhanced online tool and share across your organization with anyone who interacts with rail operations.

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) Upgrade: Effective February 11, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. CST, Union Pacific will upgrade EDI requirements in conjunction with Railinc’s Forward and Store EDI upgrade to version 8050, which is coordinated within the railroad industry. You can learn more by accessing our EDI webpage and the customer announcement issued earlier this week.

I don’t want to close without mentioning the devastating wildfires occurring throughout California. My heart goes out to all those affected. Union Pacific has a strong network of facilities and customer locations in California and we stand ready to help the community rebuild when the time comes. While we are not currently experiencing any service-related issues due to the fires, we are monitoring the situation closely.

Thank You
Thank you for trusting Union Pacific with your transportation needs. We genuinely value your business and are committed to providing you with a safe and reliable service product. We look forward to growing the business together.

Sincerely,
